🪜How to Influence Up, Become Visible at Work and Earn that Coveted Promotion!
Over the past several weeks, I have been scheduled time to engage in some learning and growing: Attending the annual virtual Summit hosted by Coaching.com
; the 2024 Ontario Labour Market Conference, and popping in on webinars and podcasts.
Two weeks ago I dropped in on an impactful conversation between Ileana Musa (she/her/ella), Managing Director at Morgan Stanley and Mariela Dabbah (she/her/ella), CEO & Founder of the Red Shoe Movement.
The discussion focused on how to influence up, and one of the questions I posed was, “How can ambitious women prepare for a promotion?”
At a time when it’s being said that promotions are hard to come by, it’s important to share tips and resources on the topic from experts.
This post is the first of two that will share a few bits and bytes that I captured from the interview. Of course, it’s interspersed here and there with my own thoughts.
Did you know that one of the ways to become visible at work is to highlight the contributions of others? So said Ileana. How do you do that?
📍Start by pointing out the results and impact of collaborative efforts, whether they are volunteer events or projects you’ve coordinated or participated in. Collaboration is key!
📍Emphasize the contributions of team members and articulate why you are proud of these achievements. As an emerging leader, it’s not only about you.
But wait…this approach should be part of a deliberate communication strategy, ensuring others understand the collective impact of your work.
📍Regularly share updates, whether weekly or monthly, with your manager or the broader team. You might ask your manager for opportunities to present these updates in team meetings, ensuring you spotlight efforts beyond your usual tasks. This not only highlights your involvement in diverse activities but also showcases the impact your work has across the organization. You need to become visible to others outside your immediate department if you wish to climb the proverbial career ladder!
Watch for another short post on what Ileana referred to as the “Drip Strategy” as a way to influence up.
Thank you Ileana and Mariela for discussing such an important topic.
