𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐞!

I’ll never forget the first time someone questioned my dream.

When I felt stuck in a job where I was being overlooked for promotions, I knew it was time to do something different.

I sought the advice of a career coach.

At the end of our engagement, it was clear to me what I wanted to do: writing and teaching / training. I had done them before.

When I excitedly shared my dream of teaching at a college with a colleague, the first thing she said was “𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡?”

I responded, “𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦.”

When I mentioned to another person that I wanted to start a resume-writing business on-the-side, I heard it again:

“𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩?”

My answer was the same: “𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦.”

In later years, I said I wanted to write a book, and you guessed it…

“Who told you that you can write a book?”

Again it was: “𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦.”

That phrase has become my mantra—especially during those quiet, uncertain moments when I have to remind myself of who I am, whose I am, and what I’m capable of.

The truth is, no one gave me permission.
I had to give it to myself.

Over the years, I have transitioned careers more than once. I have gone from employee to career coach, from overlooked to in demand. And each step of the way, I had to believe in myself long before anyone else did.

As tennis star, Venus Williams said:

My message today is for anyone contemplating making a career transition, but fear keeps getting in the way…
