It’s time for the hashtagMondayRx Prescription in the form of a little pep talk for leaders and those who manage people.

Last Friday I cancelled one of my services that I have had for many years. On Sunday, I received this email:

Well, look when I am hearing that I am a valued client. The moment I called to cancel my service. They took me for granted all these years believing I would be a loyal customer for life!

Now, it is too late to explore options because the horse has already left the stable.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝLeaders, don’t make this mistake. When you have highly talented people around that you really want to keep, consider having retention or stay interviews with them before they decide to leave.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝIn fact, these should not be one-time occurrence, but frequent career conversations until it becomes routine. Donโ€™t wait until they are going through the door to let them know how much you appreciate them and want them to stay.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝOnce you start having these conversations, listen carefully to what they are saying then commit to helping them get what they need to remain productive engaged and happy.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝWhen employees become disengaged, they will leave to find new opportunities where they can grow, learn new skills and engage in exciting work.

Here is a sample of stay interview questions you can ask your direct report:

โ˜‘๏ธWhat do you want to learn in the coming year?

โ˜‘๏ธIf you were to win the lottery and resign, what would you miss the most about your job?

โ˜‘๏ธIf you had a magic wand, what would be the one thing you would change about the company?

โ˜‘๏ธAs your manager, what could I do a little more of or a little less of?

โ˜‘๏ธWhat does a great day for you looks like?

โ˜‘๏ธHow do you like to be recognized?

Having retention or stay interviews will eliminate the need for exit interviews.
