A few months ago, I was gifted a name brand handbag for my birthday.
Unpacking it a few days ago, I noticed the original price tag hidden inside, and nearly fell off my chairโฆ$798.00.
I know my family wouldnโt be out of their mind, but I did ask โHow much did it cost?โ I was relieved to learn they got it for a little less than the posted sale price of $149.98.
But this also brought back memories of the day I bought a handbag at Macyโs for $85.00, many, many years ago. The guilt I felt going home from Manhattan to Brooklyn, I was sure I was going to return the bag the next day. I didnโt though.
Fast forward to this other handbag. I thought, who would splurge on a leather handbag priced at a staggering $798.00? Does the design and brand justify this hefty price tag?
Now, donโt get me wrong. I am not beating up on anyone who wants and can afford an expensive handbag. But sometimes the same people who say they canโt afford career services are the ones who wouldnโt hesitate to splurge on an expensive handbag. But, to each his / her own.
That said, let me bring it home to career services.
I know I am not the only one who, when asked, โHow much do you charge?โ, sometimes gets responses such as โI canโt afford itโ, โItโs too highโ, or โCan you give me a โdiscountโ? ๐คจ
So, hereโs my unscientific comparisons between investing in career coaching services and investing in a luxury handbag. (Feel free to agree or disagree with me):

๐ ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: Coaches help navigate industry changes, technological advancements, and workplace challenges. A handbag wonโt adaptโit remains a static accessory.
๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ : Coaches facilitate networking, mentorship, and industry contacts. A handbag wonโt introduce you to influential professionals.
๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐-๐๐ง๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ: Career coaching is an investment in yourselfโan asset that appreciates. A handbag is a fleeting indulgence, satisfying only immediate desires.
It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
An investment in a handbag? ๐
