As a career coach, I often get asked
“Isn’t it too late for me to change my career?”
And my answer? “It is never too late to chase your dreams and pursue success.” So said Madam C. J. Walker, known as the first female self-made millionaire in America.
Sometimes, mid-life is exactly the right time to make a shift.
I know this because I’ve done it myself.
For years I had my head down working away like crazy and thinking that my manager would see me and reward me with the promotion I was seeking.
Instead, others less qualified were climbing the ladder while I was stuck on the broken rung!
But, here’s what I’ve learned along the way, and what I share with my clients every day:
1- You bring more than you think – Changing careers mid-life means you’re not starting from scratch. You’re bringing years of experience, and insights.
2 – You know yourself better – By now, you know what drives you, what you value, and what you’re willing to tolerate. This kind of self-knowledge isn’t something we have in our 20s. With that clarity, a career change becomes less about experimenting and more about pursuing something meaningful.
3 – Your network is a goldmine – Over the years, you’ve built relationships and connections that can support and guide you. Reaching out to old colleagues, and mentors.
Yes, shifting careers later in life can be challenging.
It’s never too late to start a new career
It’s never too late to start living your purpose and passion
But from where I stand, it’s worth every single step.
So, if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond and feel the pull to try something new, don’t ignore it.
Ballet dancer Misty Copeland said, “Know that you can start late, look different, be uncertain and still succeed.”
