The Wright Career Solution

Imposter syndrome doesn’t go away by itself

Imposter syndrome doesn’t go away by itself

You have to actively silence it…

If you’ve ever thought, “I am not good enough”, I don’t have the experience,” or “Someone else could do a better job,” then welcome to the club.

Imposter syndrome has a way of showing up just when you’re trying to make a big leap or put yourself out there.

Had a client recently who was stuck in imposter syndrome. She was invited to an interview and was so concerned by the fact she doesn’t have a degree. In fact, she said “I am ashamed I don’t have a degree.”

First thing I said to her was that if she didn’t have what they were looking for, they wouldn’t have invited her to the interview.

Second, she should focus on all that she has achieved (and she has achieved a lot), despite the lack of a degree.

Just this shift in mindset gave her a boost of confidence!

If you are feeling like this, I have good news for you – you can tackle imposter syndrome.

And let me be clear. I am not espousing a Pollyanna, pie-in-the-sky positivity approach. I am daring you to recognize that imposter syndrome is real, but focus on your abilities, and what’s possible.

Here are five tips to get you started:

🛑 Stop over-researching. When you feel like you don’t know “enough,” you end up endlessly scrolling or reading. Set a limit.

🥇Believe in yourself. You might be thinking “but that’s easier said than done.” Let me remind you of what Venus Williams once said, “You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. That’s what makes you a winner.”

👉🏾 Share, don’t compare. Instead of silently comparing yourself to others, start conversations with them. You’ll usually find they’re working through doubts too.

👀 Notice who values you. Pay attention to the people who seek you out or rely on you. Sometimes it’s easier to believe in ourselves when we see the impact we have on others.

🚧Defy other people’s expectations. Don’t let a negative mindset or limiting beliefs prevent you from achieving your goals.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t vanish, but you can learn strategies to help you deal with it when it raises its head.

If you’re dealing with this too, I’d love to hear what helps you.
