Most people in leadership positions are bosses not real leaders.
There, I said it.
Governor Wes Moore of Maryland once said “There are people who have no job description who are remarkable leaders and there are people who have big titles and they’re doing absolutely nothing.”
Sometimes we get bogged down by our titles rather than focusing on the work we are doing and the contributions we are making.
Leadership isn’t about holding a fancy title or managing people. It’s about how you show up, even when no one’s watching.
Here’s how you can demonstrate your leadership capabilities, no matter where you are or what title you have:
📌 Take initiative, even when it’s not your job: If you notice a project is stuck or a process is broken, step up and suggest a solution. Leaders don’t wait for instructions – they create momentum.
📌 Support others without expecting anything in return: Offer to mentor a colleague or help out when someone is struggling.
Real leaders help others grow, even when there’s no direct benefit.
📌 Create collaboration opportunities, even when you’re not in charge: Start a cross-functional team project or bring people together to solve a problem.
You don’t need authority to build teamwork – you just need the willingness to take action.
📌 Be the problem-solver, not the problem-pointer: When challenges arise, don’t just point them out. Bring solutions to the table.
Great leaders listen, learn, and lead with empathy, and they keep things moving, even in tough situations.
Are you ready to step up and lead from where you are?
