November is Career Month in Canada, and here’s some news…
60% of Canadians say upskilling is essential for career growth
But here’s the irony – time and cost are holding most of us back
I recently came across the Growclass and Angus Reid Upskilling Sentiment Survey, and the numbers are eye-opening.
Almost two-thirds of Canadians believe that gaining new skills is necessary to stay competitive in the workforce.
But the challenges they face to actually make it happen tell a different story.
Here’s what I found especially interesting:
• 58% of people say they simply don’t have the time to commit to upskilling.
• 49% feel the costs are just too high to make it work.
• Gen Z and Millennials are feeling this the most, they’re eager to grow but have the least resources to do it.
• Even Boomers, with retirement approaching, view upskilling as a part of personal growth.
And here’s where companies can make a difference.
Over half of Canadians say they’d be more likely to pursue upskilling if:
1. Employer-funded opportunities – 64% say they’d jump at the chance if companies covered costs.
2. Affordable or free platforms – because a lot of us can’t justify high expenses right now.
3. Government grants – 43% would consider it if more funding options were in place.
There’s a clear takeaway here.
If we really want an adaptable, future-ready workforce, we need more accessible upskilling ways.
So, I’m curious! Are time and cost the biggest barriers to upskilling or is it something else?
