The Wright Career Solution

Quit Playing Small…

Quit Playing Small...

International Women’s Day is just around the corner, and the theme is hashtagEmbraceEquity. How do we accomplish this? Sometimes it requires an assessment of the conversations we have with ourselves. If we don’t embrace ourselves as equal and capable, then no one will believe either.

My client had an interview on Monday for a Director of Finance job. During our coaching session, she kept going back to what she lacked even though she had concluded she could do 90% of the job. She was diminishing her capabilities. I suggested that she ‘quit playing small’, and approach the interview as if she already had the job.

As I did with my client, I want to offer some unsolicited career advice to those women who are busy counting themselves out, limiting themselves, and playing small. It’s time to QUIT!

Quit… 🆂econd-guessing your abilities and potential

Quit… 🅼aking decisions based on what’s safe or what’s sure

Quit…🅰pologizing for your talents and abilities

Quit… 🅻iving within your comfort zone; and

Quit… 🅻etting others define who you are!

📌 Identify your limiting beliefs: Most times, playing small starts in our heads, the conversations we engage in. Reflect on the beliefs that you are holding on to. These could be beliefs about your worth, abilities, or what you can achieve. Write down these beliefs and challenge them by asking yourself if they are really true.

📌Celebrate your accomplishments: Take time to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. These little wins will help you recognize your value and build your confidence.

📌Surround yourself with positive people: Surround yourself with people who lift you up and support you in your goals. These people will help you to stay motivated and remind you of your worth. Do you have your own Personal Board of Advisors (PBoA)? Now is a great time to create one.

📌Set achievable goals: Set achievable goals that align with your values and priorities. This will help you to stay focused and motivated, and will also give you a sense of accomplishment.

📌Practice self-care: Sometimes we feel so beaten down that we forget that taking care of ourselves is an important part of recognizing our worth.

📌Take calculated risks: Taking calculated risks is important for your personal and professional growth. This could mean trying something new, asking for a promotion or raise at work, or starting a new business. Taking risks does not mean being reckless. It means you have given some serious thought to it before you step out.

📌Dream with ambition, and believe in yourself and your abilities: Recognize that you are worthy and capable of achieving great things.

Don’t allow anyone to define your worth or value. Keep pushing forward, even when things get tough.
