Sometimes we WIN and sometimes we LEARN!
Let that sit with you for a while!
It’s so easy for us to see things in absolutes – win or lose. Chiefs won and Eagles lost, for example!
But, from a career or job search perspective, what if you change LOSE to LEARN?
Right now, layoffs are rampant, amounting to huge losses. While I am not about to minimize its impact, and realize people have to go through the grieving process, could there be some element of learning from this?
A client accepted a role with a company because the salary and title sounded right. A few weeks into the job, they changed his job title and lowered the salary. Four months later, he was laid off.
A few losses for sure, and he is hurting, but one of the big lessons he has learned is that he should’ve done his due diligence. Had he dug a bit deeper; had he asked more questions, he probably could’ve avoided that situation. He is now treating it as a learning instead of a loss.
Probably, it wasn’t a layoff. It could’ve been the job you didn’t get, even though you felt the interview went well. Did you view it as a loss, or a moment to reflect and learn?
Next time, before you jump to the conclusion that you lost, give it some thought to see if there is something you could learn from the experience.
All losses are not created equally. Sometimes we WIN and sometimes we LEARN!
