Stop waiting for someone to recognise your value!
Because they won’t…
As I often say to my clients,
“Sometimes you have to toot your own horn, so people know you’re coming.”
As we enter the last quarter of 2024, allow me to reintroduce myself.
My career has been all about taking risks and making things happen.
A chance visit to the Canadian Consulate in Jamaica changed the trajectory of my life and career in many ways. My friend, who I had accompanied to the Consulate, told me that Canada was looking for people like me and my husband. I asked a staff member and was handed a questionnaire.
Months later, armed with our permanent papers, we made a detour to New York City, and that led me to a job opportunity at the UN.
Not every career decision happens in a straight line, and sometimes in taking risks we can create our own luck.
After moving to Canada, and spending several years in corporate, promotions kept passing me by. What was the problem since my performance appraisals were stellar. My frustrations led me to take another risk. I reflected on my transferrable skills and started a side hustle writing resumes, and soon after accepted a part time professor role at Sheridan College. The rest, as they say, is history.
Sometimes, you just have to take the wheel of your career and steer it in another direction when the path you are on is leading to nowhere. I found my home in career development and dedicated myself to continuous learning through formal and informal means.
I was recognised as an Alumni of Distinction, and a 2021 nominee for Premier’s Award by Conestoga College. And on three separate occasions I was recognized as an Outstanding Career Leader by Career Professionals of Canada.
Working with women has always held a high priority for me. In 2016, I founded The Let’s GROW Project. (There’s a larger story to this, which I will write about another time).
The initial aim was to see how many women I could connect with to have one high-impact coaching session during the year. It’s now grown into an annual Visioning event where we meet every January to set big goals and make plans.
Now, in my role as a career coach, I help women amplify their voices, build their confidence, and shine in their chosen career.
If you’re ready to take charge of your career and make a real impact, let’s connect.
DM me using ‘AspiretoGROW’ and let’s talk.
This Fall, I’ve planned many exciting things, so stay tuned!
